Open Office Installation on Linux

Open Office can be selected during the Red Hat Linux installation. If Open Office is not yet installed, Download Open Office.

Extract the files from the downloaded file and run the install command as super-user:

tar zxvf OOo*gz
cd OOo*install
su
./install --prefix=/opt
Become a normal user again (no longer the super-user) and run the user-setup command:
cd /opt/OpenOffice.org....
./setup
Select a Workstation installation (not a Local installation) since the workstation installation takes much less disk space. About 2 megabytes will be copied to your home directory.

Then start Open Office:

~/OpenOffice.org*/soffice

Much of using Star/Open Office can be learned by using the built-in Help system. Below are tips that are more difficult to find.

Change the display between inches and centimeters

Adding animation to slides
To set up animation on a slide so each time you press the space bar, the next item in a bullet appears: Here is a sample animation pop-up window:

Toggle between full-screen mode and normal mode
To toggle between full-screen mode and normal mode press control-shift-j

Printing 2 (or 3 or 4 or 6) slides per page for handouts:
To print only the handouts rather than handouts and the full page slides:
Your slide background is dark and the text is white, but you want the handouts to be printed with black text and a white background
That will cause the slides to be printed with the text in black with a white background.
